I collaborated closely with curator Claire Breukel for the development of 'Black Mirror' branding, we aimed to encapsulate the diverse contemporary works by artists from El Salvador and its diaspora, acknowledging the intense subject matter of gang violence, death, and the aftermath of the Salvadoran Civil War. Soliciting feedback and inspiration from our gallery team, I created various marketing materials, including web graphics, email blasts, rack cards, exhibition graphics, print publications, and a catalogue.
I intended to create a cohesive and minimalistic aesthetic that resonated with both the artworks and the exhibition's overarching theme, I drew inspiration from the namesake art installation's hexagonal structure. This inspiration materialized into a die-cut embossing stencil for the catalogue cover. The title 'Black Mirror,' referencing the reflective black screen of inactive devices, guided the choice of a monospace typeface, subtly evoking connections to computer programming languages. In summary, the collaborative branding process seamlessly wove together diverse elements to support the exhibition's theme and the impactful artworks it showcased.
